Pre-Transfer Advising

Pre-Transfer Advising helps prospective transfer students to:

  • Determine how previous coursework will apply to a UMBC computing or engineering program at UMBC
  • Identify remaining general education or major requirements, and which could be taken at a Maryland Community College
  • Understand transfer admissions timeline and program policies
  • Connect to resources that will ease the transition to the University

Pre-Transfer Advising is most helpful for transfer students who have earned a high school diploma (or equivalent) and are at least one year from transferring. If you are interested in Pre-Transfer Advising, please complete the UMBC COEIT Pre-Transfer Advising Form. Once you have completed the form, a COEIT Transfer Advisor will reach out to you via your provided email with next steps depending on your campus of choice. If you have already received Pre-Transfer Advising, or if you have already applied/been accepted to transfer to UMBC in the upcoming semester, please email our Transfer Advisors instead of filling out the Pre-Transfer request form.

Please note, specific questions regarding the admission process, deadlines, and application should be directed to Undergraduate Admissions at (410)455-2292. Or if you’d like to have a more in-depth conversation with an Admissions Counselor about applying to UMBC, please set up a one-on-one meeting with a Counselor.

Where Our Programs are Offered

The College of Engineering and Information Technology offers programs at both UMBC’s Catonsville Campus and at the Universities at Shady Grove’s Campus in Rockville, MD. Prospective students will receive Pre-Transfer documents based on the campus preference indicated on their Pre-Transfer Advising request form. More information on our campus-specific Pre-Transfer Advising can be found below:

UMBC’s main campus is located between Baltimore, MD, and Washington, D.C. At UMBC Catonsville students can pursue all computing & engineering programs offered as well as any of the other majors, minors, and certificate programs offered across the Colleges at UMBC.

UMBC Catonsville offers COEIT majors in Chemical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems, and Business Technology Administration.

Questions about transferring to a COEIT major at UMBC’s Catonsville Campus can be directed to COEITtransfer@umbc.edu to contact a Pre-Transfer Advisor.

At UMBC-Shady Grove, located in Montgomery County, we offer upper-level coursework in our undergraduate programs. To be eligible to enroll in these courses, certain prerequisite courses must be completed before transfer. In addition to prerequisite courses, there are also additional recommended courses that we strongly encourage students to complete that will assist in the completion of general education requirements. Navigating these prerequisite and recommended courses will help ensure a seamless transfer!

UMBC Shady Grove offers COEIT majors in Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science.
