Prospective Undergraduate Students

The engineering and IT professional of the future will be multidimensional. To educate these new professionals, UMBC has built a College around a dynamic, exciting, personal process. It starts in freshman year when hands-on laboratory experience gives shape and substance to the earliest lessons in engineering and information technology. It continues throughout the curriculum. Feedback from industry, government, and alumni helps ensure that students are gaining advanced skills in the latest technologies and discovering where solutions are needed most.

The College of Engineering and Information Technology offers undergraduate degree programs in several engineering and information technology areas.

Our bachelor of science degrees in Chemical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Computer Science are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission and the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET, Inc., 111 Market Place Suite 1050, Baltimore Maryland 21202-4012; Phone: 410-347-7700.

UMBC Undergraduate Programs in Engineering & Information Technology
We encourage you to explore the many programs and opportunities available to undergraduate engineering students at UMBC. Get started by visiting the websites listed below.

Business Technology Administration (B.A.)
The BA in BTA program is designed for students who want an IT-focused education in business and management. The BTA degree is less technical in nature than the BS in IS program and the focus of the courses is more on the use of office technology to solve common business problems. Learn more.

Chemical & Biochemical Engineering (B.S., B.S./M.S.)
From creating new vaccines and antibiotics to cleaning up air and water pollution, chemical engineers develop manufacturing processes for a wide variety of applications, including food, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, biotechnology and environmental technology. Learn more.

Computer Engineering (B.S., B.S./M.S.)
Computer Engineering is a field that combines training in classical Electrical Engineering disciplines with in-depth preparation in Computer Science topics. The result is a trained problem solver who understands both the hardware and software aspects of computers and who can design and implement solutions on both sides of the hardware/software interface. Learn more.

Computer Science (B.S., B.S./M.S.)
Computer Science is a rich and diverse discipline. Areas of interest to computer scientists range from theoretical studies to software engineering (performance analysis, human factors, software development tools) to the very practical development of software for business and industry. Learn more.

Information Systems (B.S., B.S./M.S.)
UMBC’s undergraduate Information Systems program strive for interdisciplinary breadth by including courses in mathematics and statistics, computer programming, management, economics, and technical writing. The Bachelor of Science major prepares students for all potential career positions in the IS field. These include: Systems Analysis and Design, Computer Networking and Health Care Informatics. Learn more.

Mechanical Engineering (B.S., B.S./M.S.)
Undergraduates in Mechanical Engineering begin by studying the “classics”—solid mechanics, thermodynamics, and dynamics and control. Then they explore such new areas as energy systems, biomechanics, robotics, and computer-aided design. Learn more.
