Mechanical Engineering Gateway & Course Repeat Requirements

Students are admitted to the Mechanical Engineering program only when they pass all three of the following Gateway courses with a grade of B or better:

ENES 101 – Introduction to Engineering
MATH 152 – Calculus and Analytic Geometry II
ENME 110 – Statics

Students who have not yet passed the gateway are Pre-Mechanical Engineering majors.

Repeat Policy & Procedures

Mechanical Engineering/ Pre-Mechanical Engineering majors are permitted two attempts in courses required for the major. They are considered registered for a course if they are enrolled after the end of the schedule adjustment period. A course in which the student receives a grade of “W” (Withdraw) is counted as an attempt. This policy applies to courses taken at UMBC or another institution.

Current UMBC students who require a third attempt will need to receive support from the Undergraduate Program Committee as part of the Course Repeat Petition process. Third attempts are not guaranteed and students not permitted a third attempt for a course required for the major will need to select a new major.

In order to request permission for a third attempt current students must:

  1. Meet with their assigned academic advisor to discuss the petition process, timing, and alternative options.
  2. Submit the Mechanical Engineering course repeat Google form. A link to this form will be sent directly by the Mechanical Engineering department to all Pre-Mechanical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering students towards the end of each semester. Contact your academic advisor if you do not have a link to the form.
  3. Submit the Course Repeat Petition to the Academic Success Center.

All Mechanical Engineering/ Pre-Mechanical Engineering students who submit the Mechanical Engineering course repeat Google Form will be notified of the committee’s decision once it is made. The committee will also contact Undergraduate Petitions with their statement of support or statement that the course repeat is not supported.

Incoming transfer students who have taken or will require a third attempt should reach out to coeittransfer@umbc.edu to discuss eligibility and next steps. Students planning on attending the Shady Grove campus should reach out to sgcoeitadvising@umbc.edu.
