When to apply:

Phase I : Students typically apply after completing CMSC 313, 331, and 341.

Students may apply any time after completing MATH 151, MATH 152, MATH 221, CMSC 341 and 17 additional credits in computer science courses.

Admission to Phase I based on:

  1. Student’s academic record
  2. Expected to have an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  3. Average of 3.5 or higher in computer science courses
  4. Evaluation of the student’s Statement of Purpose as it appears on the application.
  5. An interview

Admission to Phase I allows the following:

  1. may take up to nine credits of graduate-level Computer Science courses (with the exception of CMSC 698, CMSC 699, CMSC 799) ·
  2. Courses may be applied towards the requirements for the Bachelor’s degree.
  3. Graduate courses selected in consultation with his or her faculty advisor.
  4. In general, the courses selected will be used as electives in Area VI in the CMSC major.

Admissions Requirements for CMSC students:

  1. Minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 Maintain good academic standing throughout the duration of undergraduate degree.
  2. Students are required to complete CMSC 331, CMSC 341, and STAT 355.* *Note that the three courses mentioned above have certain prerequisites.
  3. Students are suggested to take MATH 151, MATH 152, MATH 221, CMSC 201, CMSC 202, and CMSC 203 in their first and second years if they are interested in this accelerated Bachelor/MPS degree focusing on Data Science.

Admissions Requirements for non-CMSC students:

  1. Minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 Maintain good academic standing throughout the duration of undergraduate degree.
  2. Students are required to complete the following courses before applying: Statistics (STAT 351 or STAT 355 or equivalent) Linear Algebra (MATH 221 or equivalent) Programming (CMSC 201 or IS 147 or equivalent)
  3. Once admitted to the combined program, the student must maintain a 3.0 or higher grade point average.

When to apply:

Junior or Senior Year

In order to be eligible for the accelerated graduate certificate or master’s degree option, you must meet the following requirements:

  1. Have a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0. If less than 3.0, admission consideration based on Graduate Program Director’s discretion.
  2. Be a junior or senior at UMBC, and be admitted at least one semester prior to completion of bachelor’s degree.
  3. Maintain good academic standing throughout the duration of undergraduate degree.
  4. While most Accelerated Program students are from the College of Engineering and Information Technology (COEIT), students from outside COEIT who also have an overall GPA of 3.0 may apply via the Cybersecurity Strategy and Policy option.
  5. If admitted, such students may take CYBR 620, 621, 622, and/or 623 to begin graduate cybersecurity studies while still an undergraduate student.
  6. Non-COEIT students who believe they are qualified to pursue more technical cybersecurity opportunities should contact the Cybersecurity GPD to discuss their interests.

Students who are interested in the BS/MS program should discuss their interest with a department advisor as early as the sophomore year. A student should request acceptance into the program in the first semester of the junior year. This will be the semester following the one in which 60 credits have been earned toward the BS degree.

To be eligible for this program

  1. A student must have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.2 or higher at UMBC and all other institutions attended. This is a minimum requirement, and attainment of a 3.2 GPA does not guarantee admission to the combined degree program.
  2. The admission decision is determined on an individual basis taking into account the student’s past record, expected future performance, and how well the combined program would meet student’s educational objectives.
  3. Applicants for the combined program must have completed the IS gateway and be enrolled in IS 410 prior to applying for the combined program.
  4. Students should be aware of the current requirements for admission to the department’s Master level graduate programs so that they will complete coursework meeting these same requirements, or their equivalents. Applicants should have completed or have those courses underway prior to applying for the BS/MS program.
