Non-Admitted Computer Science Students

Wondering What’s Next UMBC

We appreciate your interest in UMBC and our Computer Science program. If you have been waitlisted, please know that a decision of non-admittance at this time does not end your UMBC future. Students follow different paths in obtaining their college degree and we’re always willing to assist you in any way we can. Below is some additional information that may be helpful as you consider your options:

  • To have your application reconsidered, we recommend that you complete additional transferable college coursework at your local MD Community College and improve your academic record, particularly if your GPA is below a 3.0. If your GPA is above a 3.0, working on additional coursework can also improve overall degree progress and help you to better prepare for your transition to UMBC.
    • Working on the gateway courses (Computer Science 1 & 2 and Discrete Structures) as well as calculus sequence (Calc 1 & 2 + Linear Algebra), and science sequence + lab* (equivalent sequence of UMBC’s BIO141/BIO142 or CHEM101/CHEM102 or PHYS121/PHYS122 + lab science)

*Labs are typically included in community college science courses. If both parts of sequence are completed, additional science lab would not be required

  • If you have not yet completed your language sequence, these are additional courses you can take before your transfer. Click here to learn more about the language requirements.
  • Meet with a COEIT Transfer Advisor
    • Talk through and plan your next steps to be admitted to UMBC in a future semester
    • Discuss the specific courses that you could take at a Maryland Community College to continue making progress toward your Bachelor’s Degree.
  • We offer Pre-Transfer Advising for transfer students who are yet to be accepted into a COEIT major at UMBC. Learn more about our Pre-Transfer Advising process here.
    • Determine what classes at your Maryland Community College will transfer over toward the completion of your UMBC degree using ARTSYS. For a walkthrough of how to utilize ARTSYS, please watch our advisor walk-through.
    • If you are currently enrolled in an institution other than a Maryland Community College, you can review how your classes may transfer over using TES. To learn more about using TES for transfer credit equivalency, please refer to our video here.

If you wish to have your application reviewed again, please send Undergraduate Admissions a letter stating this interest by September 1 (for spring admission) or February 1 (for fall admission), and indicate which college you plan to attend in the interim. Admissions will update your current application; therefore, no additional application fee will be required. They can extend this courtesy once during the application process before another transfer application will need to be provided. For further information about this process, email the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at Admissions@umbc.edu.

Additional Opportunities to stay connected with UMBC!

If you have completed less than 30 credits and/or plan to take more than a semester’s worth of classes at your local community college to complete an associate’s degree, consider applying for the Transfer Student Alliance

This is a wonderful member benefit program for students intending to complete an associate degree at a Maryland community college prior to transferring to UMBC.

Applicants for TSA membership should be enrolled at a Maryland community college after obtaining a high school diploma or equivalency. Competitive applicants for membership have at least 12 college credits completed with a 3.0 GPA or higher and have about 2 semesters remaining prior to transferring to UMBC. Students should follow the application recommendations below to be able to fully utilize the program benefits prior to transferring to UMBC.
